As Thailand is mai bpen rai culture, besides staying home I see only two options in the case of a life threatening situation.

1. Stop eating all fish/shellfish products on your visit, or..
2. Get the above translations recorded for your smart phone

I'd add the caution that non-Thai servers (Burmese, Khmer) are not uncommon in Bangkok, but also elsewhere in Thailand, especially near borders. Many can speak Thai, to some degree or another, but are frequently unable to read Thai.

Just another reason to follow Desi's excellent suggestion of having a native speaker record the phrase in a sound file you can play back from your phone

YALA, January 28, 2011 (AFP) - A security volunteer collecting her two-year-old daughter from day care was among four people shot dead in separate attacks in Thailand's insurgency-plagued south, police said Friday.

Unknown gunmen attacked the 37-year-old Buddhist woman in front of her child in Pattani province on Thursday afternoon.

Two Muslim men, aged 24 and 41, were killed in separate drive-by shootings in the same province on Thursday.

Another gun attack in neighbouring Yala province on the same day left a 35-year-old Muslim security volunteer dead at his home.

Shadowy Islamic insurgents have appeared to intensify fighting recently, with an unusually brazen attack by armed rebels on a Thai military base in Narathiwat province last week killing at least four soldiers.

On Friday, a Buddhist monk and three troops escorting him to collect morning alms were injured when a homemade bomb hidden at the foot of a bridge in Pattani was detonated by radio.

Militants have waged a violent campaign in Thailand's southernmost region bordering Malaysia since early 2004, leaving more than 4,400 people dead, including both Muslims and Buddhists.

Thailand extended emergency rule last week in most of the Muslim-majority region for another three months, despite rights groups' concerns about the powers given to the military.

Things Change

Some tourists started to come here in early 70s, when the only business here were coconuts and fishing. I went to Samui first time in 1989-90. Electrical power cuts were then so common, you didn't even notice them. Of course prices were lower (Khao phed gai; fried rice with chicken was 10 bath) But as Samui has become a very popular tourist destination, prices is of course higher today, even if they still can be considered as very reasonable. Many hope that Samui stay at least a little more relaxed then Phuket and Pattaya but time will show.

Samui Attractions

Koh Samui is not a place where you will find the "most famous" Buddhist wats (temples) or statues etc. I would suggest cities such as Bangkok, Nakhon Pathom, Chaing Mai, Sukhothai or Ayutthaya. And if you are looking for really big hotels and a busy nightlife, I would recommenced Patong beach in Phuket or maybe Pattaya. But Koh Samui is perfect if you want a place without really big hotels, resorts and discotheques or clubs, but where you still can find great beaches, places to eat, bars and even a couple of nightclubs. Most people who has visit Koh Samui chooses to go back and some returns again and again... You can easily book your Koh Samui tours and activities online here.

Waterfalls

To be honest, you will not find a "Niagara looking" waterfall on Samui, but it can be a nice experience anyway.


Na Muang Waterfall

Located about 10 km south of Nathon. It is about 80 meters high. You have to walk for a while to get here.


Hin Lad Waterfall

Located 2 km south of Nathon Town. Take a walk in the forest and enjoy a soft drink or why not a refreshing Thai beer such as Singha, Beer Chang or Leo afterwards.

Extending your Visa

To extend a visa on Koh Samui, just go to the Koh Samui Immigration Office. It is located 2 km South of Nathon town on Thaweeratphakdee Road. If you need to go for a visa run, there are buses, minibuses to Malaysia and Myanmar (Burma) via Ranong. Nowadays there are also flights to Malaysia. Berjaya Air flies to Kuala Lumpur and Fire Fly flies to Penang. You can easily book tickets from the travel agencies on the island.

Big Buddha

Wat Phra Yai is a more than 12 meter tall Buddha statue, first built in 1972. It is located on a small island but today connected with main land with a bridge. Please show respect and wear proper clothes and shoes while visiting. This is not just a tourist attraction, but also an important Buddhist symbol for the local Thai people here. In 2005 and 2006, Big Buddha has been extended with a Dharma wheel and a traditional Suphannahong boat.

Koh Samui Full Moon Party

The Koh Samui Full Moon Party is attended both by locals and tourists. It is one of the most well attended parties in Thailand. The party stars when twilight falls. Koh Samui Full Moon Parties are usually held any full moon day from the months of April to December.
When you are attending a full moon party for the first time, remember to not carry any valuable items when going to the beach party. The atmosphere might get too crazy and you will never know of some pickpockets that are also joining the party. Second, when a person you are not familiar with approaches you and offers you a drink, it is recommended that you do not accept the drink. You never know if that person mixed something into your drink.
A visit to Koh Samui will not be complete if you do not attend and experience a Full Moon Party. If you love beach parties in general, you should head to Koh Samui and get yourself entertained.

Question: How does one set up a reliable, fast internet connection? (Seems like you must have a reliable connection?)

Answer: I’m actually going to cheat a bit on this one because part of it has been answered so well on another site. I seriously recommend that unless you have a business need for internet you simply go with the free Wi-fi that is available all over Thailand. First of all it’s free and second of all it comes without the hassle of dealing with the Thai Cable or Telecom providers.

For a really complete guide to free Wi-fi access throughout Thailand just point your browser to Stickmans Guide to Thailand Wi-fi.

Stickman claims that he isn’t going to list all of the Wi-fi spots on the page, but there are so many that he really doesn’t need to list them all. Of course the list is best for Bangkok, but there are listings for other places as well including Samui, Krabi and Pattaya.

You can also head off to one of the many internet cafe’s in Bangkok where prices range from 20-100 baht per hour.

If you’re looking to get broadband access in your apartment you could face some serious frustrations. Thailand is not noted for its efficiency and internet communication is no exception to this rule.

Currently there are just two telecoms in Bangkok for wired connections – TOT (Telephone Organization of Thailand) and True. Both offer ADSL or you can go with one of many other (unproven?) ISP’s.

Here’s where the fun begins. To get a phone line installed you will need a work permit. No permit…then you will have to try to get your landlord to set up the service in his/her name, but be prepared for them to try to tack on a bit extra or even balk at the idea because they have no idea about the internet.

The cost will be between 600-2000 baht per month and speeds can be anywhere from 512k to 1Mb/sec. True is generally recognized to be much better, but you might not have a choice. If TOT installed the phone line then you’ll have to go with TOT.

There are other ISP’s out there, but they are so new that most of them are leasing bandwidth from TOT and True anyway.

1. Photocopy of the “House Registration” of the owner (showing who owns the property that the service is going to)
2. Photocopy of the Thai ID card of the owner, which they must sign
3. Photocopy of the lease (which links the property to you)
4. Photocopy of your passport, signed
5. A few thousand baht handy
6. A smile

Overall I go with Wi-Fi or an internet cafe to make my life easier and cheaper, especially if you won’t be staying in Thailand long term.

It's interesting to see how drugs have evolved. In the 70's people thought pot was the most evil drug there was. Then coke, then heroin, and now meth.
Meth is more addictive and dangerous than all drugs combined and then multiplied by 10. In the States meth and ice IS crystal meth. Here you have little pills, ya bah that are now being replaced by their big brother...crystal meth.
 If you thought the scourge of ya bah was bad, just wait. Either way, they are both "crazy medicine." My friend's brother was addicted to meth for 7 yrs.
Inevitably, like most of these addicts, he began to manufacture it because it's easy to cook. He's now clean, but it took a run in with the law.

4600 baht is a good price for local expats. In our respective home countries treatment would be 20 times that. For the local Thais I suspect this will be too high for them.

Putting people in prison for using drugs is pointless.
Users should get help and dealers should be banged up or get the death penalty because they are ruining peoples lives.
Ok we all have a choice supposedly, but it is not as easy as black and white for most people.

IF I STILL  GOT HIS ID I SHOULD WAIT COUPLE OF MONTHS(ACTUALLY  I HEARD NEARLY 2 YEARS OR MORE  UNTIL THE COURT  FINALLY  GIVE THE PERMISSION  FOR HIS ARREST IN THE THAI BORDERS OR ANYWHERE ELSE .IN THE MEAN TIME(2 YEARS)  HE COULD BE IN ALASKA!!!!  SO WHO’S GOING TO PAY FOR MY BIKE……………………?

ANYWAY DEPOSIT IS ONLY 3000BAHT BUT MY BIKES COSTS NEARLY FROM 41,000BAHT TO 60,000BAHT SO AGAIN THE 3000BAHT IS NOT EVEN ENOUGH TO BUY THE TIRES.

Check-In Service Starts Today On Suvarnabhumi Airport Link - Thailand Forum

The Airport Link rapid-transit line from central Bangkok to Suvarnabhumi will launch its air check-in service today at Makkasan City Air Terminal, five months after the rail service started last August.

Initially, the check-in service will be available only for people flying with Thai Airways International and Bangkok Airways.

"Passengers who want to check in and load their luggage can do this from three to 13 hours before departing," said Yuthana Thapcharoen, governor of the State Railway of Thailand (SRT).

There are two train services: the Express Line, a 15-minute non-stop ride from Makkasan terminal to the airport, and the City Line, a commuter train that stops at eight stations.

Tickets for the Express Line are Bt150 per trip, while fares on the City Line range from Bt15 to Bt45 per person, depending on the distance they travel.

The whole City Line journey takes about 27 minutes.

Both lines will run every day from 6am to midnight. Trains will depart every 15 minutes.

The Airport Link is connected to the Bangkok Metro Blue Line subway and BTS Skytrain.

Passengers can transfer from the Airport Link's Makkasan terminal and Phetchaburi station on the Bangkok Metro Blue Line, plus Phya Thai station, which has platforms for both the Airport Link and the Skytrain.

The airport rail line is 28.6 kilometres long and trains run at speeds of up 160kph from Suvarnabhumi Airport to Phya Thai. The stations en route are Lat Krabang, Ban Thap Chang, Hua Mak, Ramkhamhaeng, Makkasan (City Air Terminal), Ratchaprarop and Phya Thai.

Passengers can buy train tickets by using the Smart Pass card or coins. Vending machines offer tickets for up to five people at one time and total prices are calculated automatically. The Smart Pass can be topped up with cash. It can be used by both Thai and foreign passengers.

Previously, the Airport Link ran services with discount fares offered until the end of 2010. A promotional fare of Bt15 covered all journeys during the initial period.

The Airport Link is owned and will be operated by the SRT. The rail line will serve eight stations and cater for up to 50,000 passengers a day.

The baggage check-in system was developed by the SRT and Airports of Thailand (AOT).
