It is no secret that when it comes to boxing in the amateur ranks the nation of Cuba has been held among the elite for several generations.

With Yuriorkis Gamboa defending his WBA Featherweight title tonight against Rogers Mtagwa, I got to thinking about some of the other Cuban greats of the sport to go on to have remarkable professional careers.

Here's a look at the ten best professional pugilists to come from Cuba.

10. Benny "Kid" Paret, (33-12-3, 10 KOs)

Rackmultipart

In 1960 Benny "Kid" Paret would claim the World Welterweight Title with unanimous decision win over Don Jordan.

His title was lost just short of a year later when Emile Griffith would stop Paret in the 13th round of their initial bout.

Ten months later the Santa Clara, Cuba native scored a split decision win over Griffith in their return bout to once again claim the welterweight crown.

In his next fight, Paret would find himself stopped in the 10th round by Gene Fullmer in an unsuccessful bid for the middleweight title.

His next, and last, fight was once again with Emile Griffith for the welterweight crown. Despite having Griffith down and nearly out in the sixth round Griffith would come back to end the fight in the 12th round with a devastating barrage of punches.

Paret would slip into a coma shortly after the fight and sadly passed away 10 days later at the age of 25.

9. Evelio Celestino Mustelier aka Kid Tunero (97-32-16, 37 KOs)

Rackmultipart

Evelio Celestino Mustelier, better known as Kid Tunero, was Victoria de las Tunas, Cuba and had a career than spanned almost 20 years with nearly 150 fights.

Many of his early bouts would take place in Cuba, Spain as well as France.

He would go on to beat the likes of middleweight fighters Holman Williams and later on Ezzard Charles.

Kid Tunero could make for a tough night for any middleweight fighter in the 1930's and 40's.

He would go on to manage Jose Legra.

8. Florentino Fernandez, (50-16-1, 43 KOs)

Rackmultipart

With the punching power that Florentino Fernandez possessed it is no wonder why the fighter born in Santiago de Cuba was nicknamed "The Ox.".

In 1961 Fernandez would give Gene Fullmer all he could handle but would ultimately come up short dropping a split decision in a bid for Fullmer's middleweight belt.

Despite being in plenty of memorable and exiting bouts Fernandez is arguably best remembered for his knockout loss to Rubin "Hurricane" Carter where he was floored twice and stopped in just over a minute.

7. Jose Legra, (134-12-4, 50 KOs)

Rackmultipart

Featherweight great Jose Legra compiled over 60 wins in just four years from 1963-1967.

One of his losses in that period came at the hands of UK fighter Howard Winstone in June 1965.

Just over three years later the two would be matched up again with Winstone's WBC Featherweight Championship on the line.

Winstone was floored twice in the first round and referee Harry Gibbs would stop the bout in the fifth round due to Winstone's severely swollen left eye.

Legra would eventually drop a decision as well as his title to Johnny Famechon.

Nearly four years after losing it, he would regain the vacant WBC featherweight crown with a tenth-round TKO over Clemente Sanchez.

Legra, who was known as the "Pocket Cassius Clay" was born in Baracoa, Cuba.

6. Joel Casamayor (37-4-1, 22 KOs)

Rackmultipart

Joel "El Capillo" without a doubt takes the honor as best active boxer to come from Cuba.

After the conclusion to a highly decorated amateur career, Casamayor would capture gold in the professional ranks in just his 21st fight.

The slick fighter from Guantanamo would stop Jong-Kwon Baek in the fifth round on cuts to claim the WBA Super Featherweight Title.

He held on to the strap for a year and a half before losing it to power punching Acelino Freitas in a 2002 unification bout.

After splitting a pair of fights with the late Diego Corrales the two would meet again in 2006.

Casamayor would take a split decision victory and claim the WBC and Ring Magazine Lightweight Championship making him a champ in two different weight divisions.

Casamayor claimed the interim WBO Lightweight strap with a spectacular come from behind TKO over Michael Katsidis in early 2008.

Losses from the likes of Freitas, Corrales, Jose Luis Castillo and Juan Manuel Marquez shouldn't be enough to keep Casamayor from one day entering the Hall of Fame.

5. Ultiminio "Sugar" Ramos, (55-7-4, 40 KOs)

Rackmultipart

As Fidel Castro rose to power in his native Cuba, Ramos would relocate himself to Mexico City.

The biggest moment of "Sugar" Ramos' career came in 1963 at Dodger Stadium where he became the first ever boxer to hold the WBC Featherweight championship in addition to picking up the WBA version of the title with bittersweet stoppage win over Davey Moore.

Moore would die four days later due to a brain stem injury suffered in the bout.

Vicente Saldivar would eventually seize Ramos' title from him a year later.

Two failed bids for Carlos Ortiz' Lightweight Championship kept Ramos from claiming a second world title.

He career ended in 1972. 20 years later, he would be inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame.

4. Luis "El Feo" Rodriguez, (107-13, 49 KOs)

Rackmultipart

Luis "El Feo" Rodriguez was born in Camaguey, Cuba, and while his nickname translates to "The Ugly" his boxing was anything but.

Rodriguez held two wins over fellow Cuban pugilist Benny Paret and the two would share a common for in Emile Griffith.

They (Rodriguez and Griffith) met for the first time at Dodger Stadium during the same even in which Sugar Ramos claimed the Featherweight Championship.

After 15 rounds, Rodriguez bested Griffith via unanimous decision to claim the Welterweight Championship of the World.

However, both men would face each other on twice more with Griffith ending up the victor by way of a split decision in both encounters.

Rodriguez retired from the ring in 1972 after a long and storied career that included over 120 professional bouts.

He resided in Miami until his death in 1996.

3. Jose Napoles, (81-7, 55 KOs)

Rackmultipart

Jose "Mantequilla" Napoles spent the early portion of his career fighting in his native Cuba before Castro placed a ban of professional boxing. He would relocate to Mexico.

With a 59-4 record Napoles would finally get a crack at the Welterweight Championship. The bout ended after Curtis Cokes failed to answer the bell for the 14th round.

Napoles successfully defended his title in a rematch with Cokes and went on to defeat Emile Griffith.

His career suffered a minor setback in 1970 as Napoles was stopped on cuts and forced to relinquish his titles to Billy Backus.

Napoles would regain his titles just six months later against Backus in a fight that ended once again on cuts, this time suffered by Backus after a pair of knockdowns in the eighth round.

Napoles wouldn't lose a fight until 1974 against all time great Carlos Monzon who retired Napoles after the seventh round of their championship bout.

He would regain the title later in the year with a TKO win over Hedgemon Lewis.

Napoles walked away from the ring after losing his titles to John H. Stracey via TKO in the sixth.

2. Kid Chocolate (135-10-6, 51 KOs)

Rackmultipart

Eligio Sardiñas Montalvo aka Kid Chocolate was able to not only possess quickness in his hands and feel but packed quite a punch as well.

The Havana born fighter won 55 fights before dropping his fight to Jack Berg in 1930. Later that year he would land his first title shot which resulted in a points loss to Battling Battalino for the World Featherweight title.

He would move up in weight and Benny Bass for his World Junior Lightweight title in July of 1931.

He dropping matches in non-title events, he wouldn't officially lose his World Champion status until he was beaten by Frankie Click in 1933.

He would go on to fight for an additional five years without ever again challenging for another title.

He would retire from the ring in 1938 and became a boxing instructor in his native land of Cuba.

1. Kid Gavilan, (108-30-5, 28 KOs)

Rackmultipart

There really should be no surprise here to see Gerardo González, better known as Kid Gavilan, at the top spot of this list.

Kid Gavilan spend the first three years of his career fighting out of Cuba before taking it to the United States.

He built a record of 53-6-2 before challenging Sugar Ray Robinson the World Welterweight Championship. He came up short in his initial bid in dropping a unanimous decision to Robinson.

After Robinson moved up in weight Gavilan would take on eventually take on Johnny Bratton for the National Boxing Association welterweight title. He not only handed Bratton a loss but broke his jaw while doing so.

Kid Gavilan wasn't just known for his famous "bolo punch" as he gained much fame with a win over Billy Graham in 1951.

A move up to the middleweight division proved to be the beginning of the end of a storied career as he lost a close decision against Middleweight Champion "Bobo" Olson.

He moved back down to the welterweight division where he put his title on the line against Johnny Saxton. Saxton won a decision.

He won 108 bouts and despite his 30 losses, no one was ever able to knock Kid Gavilan out.

This One Sentence Translation Could Save My Life - Thailand Forum
ผมมีโรคแพ้อาหารทะเลทุกอย่างนอกจากปลา
I'm allergic to all type of seafood except fish

ผมมีโรคแพ้อาหารทะเลจำพวกกุ้งและปูแต่สามารถกินปลาและหอยได้
I'm allergic to seafood like shrimp & crab but can eat fish & clam

As Thailand is mai bpen rai culture, besides staying home I see only two options in the case of a life threatening situation.

1. Stop eating all fish/shellfish products on your visit, or..
2. Get the above translations recorded for your smart phone

I'd add the caution that non-Thai servers (Burmese, Khmer) are not uncommon in Bangkok, but also elsewhere in Thailand, especially near borders. Many can speak Thai, to some degree or another, but are frequently unable to read Thai.

Just another reason to follow Desi's excellent suggestion of having a native speaker record the phrase in a sound file you can play back from your phone:)

Four Shot Dead In Thai South - Thailand Forum

Four Shot Dead In Thai South - Thailand Forum

Four shot dead in Thai south

YALA, January 28, 2011 (AFP) - A security volunteer collecting her two-year-old daughter from day care was among four people shot dead in separate attacks in Thailand's insurgency-plagued south, police said Friday.

Unknown gunmen attacked the 37-year-old Buddhist woman in front of her child in Pattani province on Thursday afternoon.

Two Muslim men, aged 24 and 41, were killed in separate drive-by shootings in the same province on Thursday.

Another gun attack in neighbouring Yala province on the same day left a 35-year-old Muslim security volunteer dead at his home.

Shadowy Islamic insurgents have appeared to intensify fighting recently, with an unusually brazen attack by armed rebels on a Thai military base in Narathiwat province last week killing at least four soldiers.

On Friday, a Buddhist monk and three troops escorting him to collect morning alms were injured when a homemade bomb hidden at the foot of a bridge in Pattani was detonated by radio.

Militants have waged a violent campaign in Thailand's southernmost region bordering Malaysia since early 2004, leaving more than 4,400 people dead, including both Muslims and Buddhists.

Thailand extended emergency rule last week in most of the Muslim-majority region for another three months, despite rights groups' concerns about the powers given to the military.

To do on Samui

To do on Samui

Thai Boxing Stadiums

The Lamai Stadium is located in South Lamai, between Ring Road and Lamai Beach Road. Another ring is found in a bar area in the middle of the Beach Road. (so called lady boxing and free to watch) The Chaweng Stadium is the main arena on the island and located rather close to Reggae Pub. Action several times a week. Sometimes you can see "farangs" (westerners) vs Thai guys in the ring. We also recommend Ratchadamnoern and Lumpini stadiums in Bangkok if you want to see "the real thing" even if there might be good fights on Koh Samui too.

Samui Shooting Range

Pistols and machine guns! Location: Main Road. Close to Chaweng.

Go Kart

Three types of go karts to choose from. Found at Bo Phut Main Road. Lots of fun!

Bungy Jump

This adrenaline pumping activity is found at Chaweng, rather close to Reggae Pub and the Chaweng Lake.

Buffalo Fighting

A couple of arenas is located around the island. This is a Thai and local tradition with a long history.

Butterfly Garden

Here you will see amazing butterflies and other tropical insects. It is located in the South-East at Leam Set.

Magic Garden

It is located in the center of Samui. Many interesting sculptures made of cement, by the hands of a fruit farmer.

Further activities and sports are found here

Nathon

The harbor town on Samui is named Nathon. You will find banks, post offices, restaurants, stores and shops here, but it's is not a place where so many people choose to stay at. Nathon also has a rather long pier where boats arrives from mainland.

Things Change

Some tourists started to come here in early 70s, when the only business here were coconuts and fishing. I went to Samui first time in 1989-90. Electrical power cuts were then so common, you didn't even notice them. Of course prices were lower (Khao phed gai; fried rice with chicken was 10 bath) But as Samui has become a very popular tourist destination, prices is of course higher today, even if they still can be considered as very reasonable. Many hope that Samui stay at least a little more relaxed then Phuket and Pattaya but time will show.

Samui Attractions

Koh Samui is not a place where you will find the "most famous" Buddhist wats (temples) or statues etc. I would suggest cities such as Bangkok, Nakhon Pathom, Chaing Mai, Sukhothai or Ayutthaya. And if you are looking for really big hotels and a busy nightlife, I would recommenced Patong beach in Phuket or maybe Pattaya. But Koh Samui is perfect if you want a place without really big hotels, resorts and discotheques or clubs, but where you still can find great beaches, places to eat, bars and even a couple of nightclubs. Most people who has visit Koh Samui chooses to go back and some returns again and again... You can easily book your Koh Samui tours and activities online here.

Waterfalls

To be honest, you will not find a "Niagara looking" waterfall on Samui, but it can be a nice experience anyway.

Na Muang Waterfall

Located about 10 km south of Nathon. It is about 80 meters high. You have to walk for a while to get here.

Hin Lad Waterfall

Located 2 km south of Nathon Town. Take a walk in the forest and enjoy a soft drink or why not a refreshing Thai beer such as Singha, Beer Chang or Leo afterwards.

Where to stay?

There are many hundreds of different accommodations alternatives available on the Samui island. Hotels, resorts, apartments and villas. Prices starts from a few hundred baht and up. Koh Samui today, has many resorts with international high class standards. Many of those "boutique resorts" has facilities as restaurants, spas, fitness rooms, jacuzzis and pools. You will find a lot of accommodation options with a wide price range from our Samui hotel reservation.

Extending your Visa

To extend a visa on Koh Samui, just go to the Koh Samui Immigration Office. It is located 2 km South of Nathon town on Thaweeratphakdee Road. If you need to go for a visa run, there are buses, minibuses to Malaysia and Myanmar (Burma) via Ranong. Nowadays there are also flights to Malaysia. Berjaya Air flies to Kuala Lumpur and Fire Fly flies to Penang. You can easily book tickets from the travel agencies on the island.

Big Buddha

Wat Phra Yai is a more than 12 meter tall Buddha statue, first built in 1972. It is located on a small island but today connected with main land with a bridge. Please show respect and wear proper clothes and shoes while visiting. This is not just a tourist attraction, but also an important Buddhist symbol for the local Thai people here. In 2005 and 2006, Big Buddha has been extended with a Dharma wheel and a traditional Suphannahong boat.

Koh Samui Full Moon Party

The Koh Samui Full Moon Party is attended both by locals and tourists. It is one of the most well attended parties in Thailand. The party stars when twilight falls. Then the coastlines are placed with lots of small tables and posts are decorated with lamps. During this festivity, Thai and international Dj’s take center stage and play some of the most exciting tunes to the party people from the huge sound systems. They play all kinds of music from hip hop, Trance, R&B, reggae and even pop music. During this party, you not only enjoy dancing to the beats, but also get to taste some of the most tasty cuisine and drinks. You can also just hang around the beach and relax with your group while enjoying Traditional Thai dishes and international favorites such as burgers and pizza. You can also order and sip your favorite drinks like beer, chang, and many more. Many bars and restaurants are open until dawn to serve the hungry and thirsty party-goers.
Koh Samui Full Moon Party is also a venue to meet new people from all corners of the world. It is attended by around ten thousand people during low season and the number doubles during peak season. Aside from the dancing and drinking, it is famous for the fire dancing and fireworks displays. You can also find some vendors selling party stuff like those funny-looking eyeglasses, Henna tattoos, glowing bracelets and light sabers made from neon gel. Koh Samui Full Moon Parties are usually held any full moon day from the months of April to December.
When you are attending a full moon party for the first time, remember to not carry any valuable items when going to the beach party. The atmosphere might get too crazy and you will never know of some pickpockets that are also joining the party. Second, when a person you are not familiar with approaches you and offers you a drink, it is recommended that you do not accept the drink. You never know if that person mixed something into your drink.
A visit to Koh Samui will not be complete if you do not attend and experience a Full Moon Party. If you love beach parties in general, you should head to Koh Samui and get yourself entertained.
Anticipated Full Moon Party dates for 2011 are as follows:
• Wednesday 19 January 2011
• Friday 18 February 2011
• Saturday 19 March 2011
• Sunday 17 April 2011

Internet Connections in Bangkok and Thailand

Internet Connections in Bangkok and Thailand

Question: How does one set up a reliable, fast internet connection? (Seems like you must have a reliable connection?)

Answer: I’m actually going to cheat a bit on this one because part of it has been answered so well on another site. I seriously recommend that unless you have a business need for internet you simply go with the free Wi-fi that is available all over Thailand. First of all it’s free and second of all it comes without the hassle of dealing with the Thai Cable or Telecom providers.

For a really complete guide to free Wi-fi access throughout Thailand just point your browser to Stickmans Guide to Thailand Wi-fi.

Stickman claims that he isn’t going to list all of the Wi-fi spots on the page, but there are so many that he really doesn’t need to list them all. Of course the list is best for Bangkok, but there are listings for other places as well including Samui, Krabi and Pattaya.

You can also head off to one of the many internet cafe’s in Bangkok where prices range from 20-100 baht per hour.

If you’re looking to get broadband access in your apartment you could face some serious frustrations. Thailand is not noted for its efficiency and internet communication is no exception to this rule.

Currently there are just two telecoms in Bangkok for wired connections – TOT (Telephone Organization of Thailand) and True. Both offer ADSL or you can go with one of many other (unproven?) ISP’s.

Here’s where the fun begins. To get a phone line installed you will need a work permit. No permit…then you will have to try to get your landlord to set up the service in his/her name, but be prepared for them to try to tack on a bit extra or even balk at the idea because they have no idea about the internet.

The cost will be between 600-2000 baht per month and speeds can be anywhere from 512k to 1Mb/sec. True is generally recognized to be much better, but you might not have a choice. If TOT installed the phone line then you’ll have to go with TOT.

There are other ISP’s out there, but they are so new that most of them are leasing bandwidth from TOT and True anyway.

Here’s what you’ll need to set up broadband a condo/apartment renter (courtesy of ThailandGuru)

  1. Photocopy of the “House Registration” of the owner (showing who owns the property that the service is going to)
  2. Photocopy of the Thai ID card of the owner, which they must sign
  3. Photocopy of the lease (which links the property to you)
  4. Photocopy of your passport, signed
  5. A few thousand baht handy
  6. A smile

You can read the rest of his article here, it goes into much greater depth than this post.

Overall I go with Wi-Fi or an internet cafe to make my life easier and cheaper, especially if you won’t be staying in Thailand long term.

drugs history

Ya bah (methamphetamine) remains the most popular, although Phuket Police recently warned that ya ice (crystal methamphetamine) is taking its place as the drug of choice among those who can afford it.

Both drugs are powerful stimulants linked to violence and crime, and both are highly addictive. While the police battle with the drug trade is well publicized, island hospitals are quietly treating addicts.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's interesting to see how drugs have evolved. In the 70's people thought pot was the most evil drug there was. Then coke, then heroin, and now meth.
Meth is more addictive and dangerous than all drugs combined and then multiplied by 10. In the States meth and ice IS crystal meth. Here you have little pills, ya bah that are now being replaced by their big brother...crystal meth.
If you thought the scourge of ya bah was bad, just wait. Either way, they are both "crazy medicine." My friend's brother was addicted to meth for 7 yrs.
Inevitably, like most of these addicts, he began to manufacture it because it's easy to cook. He's now clean, but it took a run in with the law.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4600 baht is a good price for local expats. In our respective home countries treatment would be 20 times that. For the local Thais I suspect this will be too high for them.

Putting people in prison for using drugs is pointless.
Users should get help and dealers should be banged up or get the death penalty because they are ruining peoples lives.
Ok we all have a choice supposedly, but it is not as easy as black and white for most people.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  IMPORTANT INFORMATION
AS SOON AS POSSIBLE WE’LL INFORM OUR CUSTOMERS  FOR THE ADDRESS OF OUR BUSINESS.NOW WE RELOCATED TO MAENAM AND IN LESS THAN 10 DAYS WE ARE GOING TO UPDATE THIS ADD WITH THE ADDRESS(SOI,AREA AND NAME) AND ALL THE DETAILS.SO EVERYBODY CAN COME CHECK,TEST AND EVEN DRIVING THE BIKES BEFORE HE RENT IT.WE ACCEPT ANY KIND OF LEGAL DOCUMENTS  SUCH  US: ID,DRIVING LICENSE,TRAVEL DOCUMENTS AND ANY OTHER DOCUMENT CAN PROVE YOUR IDENTITY.KEEPING CUSTOMERS PASSPORT IS ILLEGAL AND AGAINST BOTH LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL AUTHORITIES.IN CASE OF A CUSTOMER WITHOUT ANY OF THE ABOVE  DOCUMENTS, THEN A COPY OF THE PASSPORT AND SMALL DEPOSIT IS NECESSARY.

IN ANY CASE PASSPORT CONTROL IS REQUIRED BY LOW. DRIVING WITHOUT THE REQUIRED VISA   AND   OR WITH   EXPIRED PASSPORT IS AGAINST THE LAW. PROHIBITING ANY TRANSACTION. IN CASE OF ACCIDENT OUR COMPANY HAS NO RIGHT TO BE AFFECTED AND COULD NOT BE ABLE TO COVER ANY KIND OF COSTS, EVEN CUSTOMERS ACTION DIDN’T BROKEN THE  LOW AND EVEN THE ACCIDENT WASN’T CAUSED BY THEIR FAULT .(AN EXPIRED PASSPORT AND AN OUTDATED VISA IS MORE THAN ENOUGH OR ACTUALLY A PERFECT  REASON TO BROKE THAI  LOW. ALSO IS A PERFECT EXCUSE FOR INSURANCE COMPANIES TO DENIED AND REFUSED TO COVER THE  LOSSES OF ANY   PHYSICAL DAMAGE  OR MENTAL INJURY OR BOTH.ANYWAY WE ARE NOT ALLOWED TO RENT ANY KIND OF MOTOR WITH OUT A VALID VISA & OR PASSPORT.THIS IS FOR THOSE WHO TRYING WITH FAKE DOCUMENTS TO CHEAT, STEAL OR DO EVERYTHING TO SCUM. EVEN FOR THOSE WHO WONDER WHAT THEY NEED TO KNOW FOR RENT A CAR OR A BIKE,  MOST OF THEM FEAR NOT BECOMING THE NEXT VICTIMS OF THE RENTAL COMPANY AND FINALLY FOR A SIMPLE SCRATCH ENDING UP PAYING A FORTUNE.

THE BEST AND SAFEST DEAL BETWEEN THE RENTER AND THE RENTAL IS TO SETTING UP THE STANDARD BEFORE THE TRANSACTION. THE RESPECT OF THOSE RULES AND THE LOCAL THAI LOW IS THE MOST IMPORTANT.ALWAYS READ THE
CONTRACT CAREFULLY.
THE OTHER SIDE AND GOOD ADVICE FOR RENTAL COMPANIES AS MINE IS ALWAYS KEEP A PERSONAL DOCUMENT OF THE RENTER THAT COULD BE ABLE TO PROVE HIS/HER I.D. OR EVEN THE PASSPORT. BECAUSE TO BE HONEST WITH EVERYBODY IT’S THE ONLY SAFE WARRANTY   WHICH MAKE SURE TO GET YOUR MONEY BACK IN CASE OF ACCIDENT. ANY OTHER DOCUMENT AT THE MOMENT IN THAILAND DOESN’T CONSIDER SAFE CHOICE BECAUSE IF MY BIKE STOLEN OR SANK OR EVEN BURNED THEN THE CUSTOMER EASILY CAN GET AWAY. CAUSE WITH HIS PASSPORT HE IS ABLE TO PASS THE THAI BORDERS, TO FLY BY AIRPLANE SO HE’S ON A PLAIN AND…….BY..BY. SO THIS IS UP 2 U. PERSONALLY I'M TRYING TO CHOOSE MY CUSTOMERS(MOSTLY PEOPLE LIVING,WORKING IN THAILAND OWNED BUSINESSES,THAI PEOPLE. MOST OF THE TIMES I NEVER ASKING FOR PASSPORT)
IF I STILL  GOT HIS ID I SHOULD WAIT COUPLE OF MONTHS(ACTUALLY  I HEARD NEARLY 2 YEARS OR MORE  UNTIL THE COURT  FINALLY  GIVE THE PERMISSION  FOR HIS ARREST IN THE THAI BORDERS OR ANYWHERE ELSE .IN THE MEAN TIME(2 YEARS)  HE COULD BE IN ALASKA!!!!  SO WHO’S GOING TO PAY FOR MY BIKE……………………?
ANYWAY DEPOSIT IS ONLY 3000BAHT BUT MY BIKES COSTS NEARLY FROM 41,000BAHT TO 60,000BAHT SO AGAIN THE 3000BAHT IS NOT EVEN ENOUGH TO BUY THE TIRES.

Check-In Service Starts Today On Suvarnabhumi Airport Link - Thailand Forum

Check-In Service Starts Today On Suvarnabhumi Airport Link - Thailand Forum

The Airport Link rapid-transit line from central Bangkok to Suvarnabhumi will launch its air check-in service today at Makkasan City Air Terminal, five months after the rail service started last August.

Initially, the check-in service will be available only for people flying with Thai Airways International and Bangkok Airways.

"Passengers who want to check in and load their luggage can do this from three to 13 hours before departing," said Yuthana Thapcharoen, governor of the State Railway of Thailand (SRT).

There are two train services: the Express Line, a 15-minute non-stop ride from Makkasan terminal to the airport, and the City Line, a commuter train that stops at eight stations.

Tickets for the Express Line are Bt150 per trip, while fares on the City Line range from Bt15 to Bt45 per person, depending on the distance they travel.

The whole City Line journey takes about 27 minutes.

Both lines will run every day from 6am to midnight. Trains will depart every 15 minutes.

The Airport Link is connected to the Bangkok Metro Blue Line subway and BTS Skytrain.

Passengers can transfer from the Airport Link's Makkasan terminal and Phetchaburi station on the Bangkok Metro Blue Line, plus Phya Thai station, which has platforms for both the Airport Link and the Skytrain.

The airport rail line is 28.6 kilometres long and trains run at speeds of up 160kph from Suvarnabhumi Airport to Phya Thai. The stations en route are Lat Krabang, Ban Thap Chang, Hua Mak, Ramkhamhaeng, Makkasan (City Air Terminal), Ratchaprarop and Phya Thai.

Passengers can buy train tickets by using the Smart Pass card or coins. Vending machines offer tickets for up to five people at one time and total prices are calculated automatically. The Smart Pass can be topped up with cash. It can be used by both Thai and foreign passengers.

Previously, the Airport Link ran services with discount fares offered until the end of 2010. A promotional fare of Bt15 covered all journeys during the initial period.

The Airport Link is owned and will be operated by the SRT. The rail line will serve eight stations and cater for up to 50,000 passengers a day.

The baggage check-in system was developed by the SRT and Airports of Thailand (AOT).
