They stand like massive man-made skeletons, abandoned towers that were supposed to be luxurious high-rise residences, hotels and office buildings. The ghost structures that haunt Bangkok, Thailand – abandoned in mid-construction since Asia’s 1997-1998 economic meltdown – are a sad and frightening hint at what many stalled skyscraper projects around the world might become.
An estimated 320 high rises have been left to rot for over a decade. Some, like the 68-story neoclassical State Tower, were finally finished. But many – like the 47-story Sathorn Unique Tower – may dot the skyline in visually striking if not beautiful spires of rusting metal and stained concrete for years to come. Though construction continues on new buildings across Bangkok, the bankrupt developers who began these abandoned skyscrapers are unable or unwilling to take action. During storms, crumbling debris rains down on the streets below.

Όμως, κάθε αφανής εταίρος είναι υποχρεωμένος να συμμετέχει στις ζημίες της αφανούς εταιρείας, οι οποίες προήλθαν από τη δράση του εμφανούς εταίρου. Ομοίως, ο αφανής ή οι αφανείς εταίροι έχουν αξίωση έναντι του εμφανούς ή των εμφανών εταίρων για τα κέρδη της εταιρείας.Το εταιρικο μεριδιο επιστρεφεται στο ακεραιο σε περιτωση λυσης η αποχωρησης των αφανων η αφανους εταιρου. Η εταιρεία αυτή εξυπηρετεί εκείνον ή εκείνους που κωλύονται ή δεν θέλουν να εμφανίζονται ότι ασκούν εμπορική δραστηριότητα.

...Sitthichai persisted in detailing the euthanasia device, prefaced with an observation: "There are a hundred small ways to finally exit your life." When Sitthichai is asked to elaborate on this point, he is compelled to issue a clarification: He carries a .45-caliber pistol during his walks - "not a small gun," he said. He would carry a larger-caliber weapon, he said, but Thai law does not allow it.
Trying to kill yourself? If this is your arm, seems like you might be a failure. This blog (nsfw), which won't be visable in Thailand for much longer, seems to capture the depravity that is the seedy underbelly of Bangkok. A testiment to the life one can get caught up in if you are not careful in Bangkok.

Update: Take this example. Do a search for "water buffalo" at google.co.th (link) and at google.com/ncr (link). You'll notice totally different results. Keep this in mind when you query Google for a term. There is a difference between Thai results and no region results.
While Singapore is still number 1, Thailand has made moves in the right direction:
This year, Thailand moved six places up the ranking from 19th position, thanks to recent reforms in registering property, protecting investors, trade and paying taxes.
These days, transferring property takes only two days and two procedures. Thailand also strengthened the rights of minority shareholders, making it easier to sue corporate directors, and introduced corporate income tax exemptions for small companies.
But significant obstacles to running a small business remain: starting a business takes 33 days, completing paperwork for taxes eats up 264 hours a year, and recovering debt from a bankrupt business takes nearly three years. The average recovery rate from an insolvent firm doesn't look good for creditors either, at 42.4 cents on the dollar.
Communications Minister Mun Patanotai said his ministry is considering spending between 100 million and 500 million baht ($2.9 million and $14.6 million) to build a gateway to monitor and block such Web sites.
The ministry has received more than 1,000 complaints about Web sites that are deemed offensive to the royal family, Mun said, but he declined to give details about them, saying the issue is "sensitive."
Many Thais go with room temperature showers most of the year since it is plenty hot. But you don't want to be caught in December with without a warm shower.
While there there were still mostly foam and banana tree bast kratongs, the bread kratongs made a strong showing and hopefully are here to stay. Lets hope birds and fish will find them edible, and they will dissapear nicely into the bellies of living things.
On another note, what's with the kratong robbers? Young boys and girls who molest just floated kratongs looking for coins? Waiting till the kratong is out of site is one thing. But to have my kratong molested 10 feet from where I am standing... Hmm. Poor form.
If you ever forget you are in Thailand, a quick dose of the News should jerk you right back to the Thailand you know and love. Thais who believe in Karma, claim that Nong Pin is the result of bad karma:

Last week two prisoners made a daring escape from a Greek prison by helicopter - their second airborne jailbreak.
Convicted drug trafficker David McMillan, who spent two years plotting his escape from a Bangkok jail in 1996, told the BBC how much planning this kind of operation takes.
I had been planning [my escape] from the moment four policeman came into a travel agency and arrested me in Chinatown, in Bangkok.

As soon as I actually got to the prison about a week later I started looking at bars and walls and electric fences and I began looking for the best place to be. I went to building six simply because it had the thinnest bars in the windows...
There were not a lot of prison guards per prisoner. Probably one prison guard to 120 prisoners. So it was really run by the trustees, who had their own little uniforms with epaulettes and aviators' wings and things like that.
The entire essence of [the escape] was secrecy. No-one in there was capable of keeping a secret I would say...
Planning is everything
The first thing to do was to get what you could call a private cell.
Most of the cells would be the size of a family garage and had 25 people in them, often sleeping like sardines packed into a tin, literally.
And if they had chains on, which everybody did, there would be the rattling of the chains, lights would be left on all night.
I paid for a light switch which was another little luxury.
It sounds like I was doing a lot of paying, I mean I had an office, a cook and a cleaner and that kind of thing, but it's not an awful lot of money - for £500 a month ($708) a person could live well.
But we have to bear in mind that most of the people in there were abandoned people. People who'd lost hope in a lot of their lives and had very few friends left.
Most people got excited at the prospect [of escape], of course, but quite soon realised, 'hang on a minute, what am I doing here?' They remembered very quickly the five inmates who'd tried and failed.
They'd got as far as the outside wall. They were all put in the punishment cell, which was really a tin box the size of a small coat locker, and dragged out every day in elephant chains and slowly beaten to death.
Four of those five died.

I started at midnight with hacksaw blades that had been sent over in a care parcel, carefully hidden, so I took those out and began working on the bars.
In fact only one bar was cut, and only partially at that. So my Swedish friend, he was built like a Viking, he had to stretch the thing out, as I squeezed through, oiled up, wearing nothing but my underwear and a pair of trainers.
Final stretch
I just got outside, and then I used a plank to get out and across the yard. It was a bookcase, in fact everything in the room had been built to assist the escape. Furniture turned into step ladders and shower curtains disassembled into long bits of rope.
I had six walls to go over. I assembled a ladder by breaking into a factory, and taking down some long bamboo pole and then I began the arduous haul over a number of these walls.
It was most eerie, I knew where all the guards were, they generally slept at night, but they could wander around, and in fact one did.
I had to hide in the shadows while that was going on. I had a few tricks to deal with that.
I was so exhausted by about 0330-0400 in the morning, that I didn't really feel anything, except wanting to keep going.
And I think that it was only that final thought as I looked around me, I knew that here were 12,000 people absolutely lost in this world, and sentenced to a life of pretty much misery, and I thought, if nothing else I have to do it.

As I got to the very top wall where the electric fence was, and dawn was creeping up, that soft orange glow was coming through. That meant that I was late. But I was tangibly outside.
[It was] a feeling I guess I haven't had since I was a child when you wake up and you know that there's something good in the world.
And then I more or less slid down the piece of rope I had. Burning my hands, I lost a bit of skin, but I was on the ground, I was outside.
And I went across the road and looked back for a few minutes at this huge prison from an angle I'd only seen from that prison van where a couple of hundred people had been squashed inside wearing the chains and prison uniform, and took a taxi.
David McMillan, author of Escape: The True Story of the Only Westerner Ever to Break Out of Thailand's Bangkok Hilton, was interviewed for the BBC World Service by Audrey Carville. A wanted man in Thailand and Australia, he lives legally in the UK.
So what happens when you get stopped at one the the police check points, and you don't have the right bribe to offer or the right 'friend' to call? Police checkpoints are out in force in December. Why? This basic formula. For every drunk driver the police nab, they will get fined starting at 5,000 baht. Of that 5,000 baht, 2,500 goes to the police station making the stop. 250 Baht goes to the Federal government and 2,250 goes to the Bangkok Metropolitan Authority (BMA). So don't be surprised if they don't accept your bribe of 2,000 baht. They are going to to get minimum 2,500 out of you by following this simple procedure:
1. Stop you, take your license or ID 2. Make you take a breathalyzer - over 50 is a fail. 3. Escort you to the police station where you will be asked your details. 4. Escort you to a room with metal bars. 5. Ignore you until someone posts bond of 20k on your behalf. (unless you got it in your pocket) 6. Someone pays your 20k bail, and it is logged in triplicate, forms are filled, time passes. 7. You are fingerprinted. 8. You are released and allowed to drive back home. 9. You return two days later to fill forms, wait in lines. 10. You are sent to the court house. Forms filled, wait in lines. 11. Seating before a judge with all other guilty parties. 12. Payment of 5,000 baht and admittance of guilt. 13. Receipt issued. 14. Two days later go to the police station. 15. Pick up check for 20k bond. Leave your license behind for 6 months. 16. Cash check. 17. Go back in 6 months to retrieve license.
All in all, a pretty darn reason to bribe a policeman whenever you can.
French tourist Jean-Pierre Charles Dulary remained in a coma, fighting for life, in the intensive care unit at Phuket's Vachira Hospital on Friday evening.

THE MAN in the water was waving for help. He was clearly in danger of drowning, becoming another Phuket statistic.
The lifeguard ran to the edge of the surf and plunged in. He took broad strokes and sped out as fast as he could.
This was the scene when Phuketwan arrived today at Nai Thon beach, on Phuket's west coast between Patong and the airport. It is where a Russian tourist drowned earlier this week, and we thought today that we'd just happened to stumble upon another real-life drama unfolding.
What we saw instead brought a great sense of relief, and then delight. This was the Nai Thon lifeguard team practicing, racing into the sea one by one, to ready for the day when their new-found skills might be life-saving.
This was no planned demonstration - we'd rocked up at the beach purely by chance, to see how the tourists there were being treated. And we've seldom been so impressed.
While generalisations can't be made about the whole of Phuket on the basis of what we stumbled upon today, if all of Phuket's beaches are being guarded by a team as skilled and conscientious as these guys appeared to be, then visitors - and residents - are in extremely safe hands.
The lifeguards' pod was set up at the northern end of Nai Thon, and it may well change position depending on the way the undercurrents are running.
There were yellow and red flags deliniating the safe swimming zone, and red warning flags along the beach a little on either side of the safe zone.
As we looked on, two tourists entered the water outside the safe zone - and a lifeguard sprinted in, waving at them and pointing in the right direction, crossing his arms in the international sign for ''Don't do that.''
No whistle, just easily understood hand-signals . . . and the couple move straight for the safe zone.
Nai Thon is a wonderful beach. The surf tumbles in, and with the sun shining as it was today, there are few better places in the world to be.
A large group of Russians appreciated it. They were all around the safe zone - the rest of the beach was deserted.
Every death from drowning in the waters off Phuket is needless and unnecessary, but the figures show that there have been 100 to the end of September, compared to 122 to the same time last year.
Beach deaths are not separated in the statistics from deaths on fishing boats or in pools or canals, so it's not possible even to say with certainty that beach drownings are down.
